Description
This war savings posters issued in the United States to promote the 7th War Loan is a rare portrayal of a sinister Uncle Sam in anti-Japanese propaganda which has resonance in an Australian context. Uncle Sam as symbolic of the United States during the First World War was made famous in Flagg’s iconic 1917 ‘I want you’ enlistment poster in which Uncle Sam points directly at the viewer. His portrayal was revived in the Second World War and in this poster is unusual for its implied violence, despite the message purportedly referring to increased industrial production.
