2117 Charles Birtles DCM MM (later Second Lieutenant) (left) and an unidentified trainee (right), both of the Australian Flying Corps, standing beside an Avro 504 aircraft, serial E7377, inscribed "Lieut Birtles 1st Plane he flew". This is during his training and both men are wearing flying suits.
