Description

Studio portrait of NX18470 Private (Pte) Kelvin Norman “Kel” Koorey, 2/1 Pioneer Battalion and 2/3 Battalion. Pte Koorey enlisted on 29 May 1940 and was allocated to the 2/1 Pioneers. When he arrived in North Africa, he transferred to the 2/3 Battalion on 2 February 1941 to be with his younger brother, NX4633 Lance Corporal Albert Koorey. Pte Kel Koorey’s two other brothers, NX54730 Pte Richmond Koorey and NX25117 Bombardier Nicholas Koorey enlisted at a similar time.

Pte Kel Koorey was seriously injured during the Kokoda campaign, when a sniper's bullet became lodged in his jaw on 6 November 1942, causing his return home for surgery in Australia. Of the four brothers, three returned home; Nicholas died on 20 June 1941 during the Syrian campaign.
