Description
Diary relating to the First World War service of 1187 Company Sergeant Major Clarence Herbert Dakin, 5th Machine Gun Company. Titled 'France 17 March 1916 to 18 May 1916', this diary covers his last weeks in Egypt and his journey from there to the Western Front. He describes the journey by ship then train to the Western Front including: the scenery along the way; food; billets and weather. Once they are closer to the Front Line, he describes the gas helmet training, weapons training and his first experiences hearing the big guns and damage to buildings.
