Description
Diary relating to the First World War service of Lieutenant Clarence Herbert Dakin, 5th Machine Gun Company, France. Titled 'France 18 December 1916 to 12 April 1917', the diary covers his service in France leading up to his death 15 April 1917. He writes about Christmas near the front lines including gifts from the Citizen's War Chest and letting the men on the front line have their pudding ration. He describes the wet and snowy wintery conditions contrasting with the clear starry nights. He also includes: rations; difficult trench conditions; constant artillery bombardments; his weapons; and casualties. He also describes his leave in the UK just prior to his death where he writes about visiting landmarks in London and Manchester.
