Collection relating to the First World War service of Lieutenant John Hampden Barton, 54 Battalion. Collection consists of a typescript copy titled 'One year with the platoon', of a diary written up in 1962 from original diaries. The diary covers active service at Ypres, Messines area, Hill 104 at Villers-Bretonneux, Hamel, Peronne and the breaking of the Hindenburg Line. It is an insightful account of an intelligent and thoughtful Platoon Commander. The account discusses the 54 Battalion 'strike' in September 1918 and also includes a photograph, copies of newsclippings, and biographical notes.
