Collection relating to 2256 Private Colin Patrick Mackay, 3rd Battalion
Pre-war studio portrait of 2256 Private (Pte) Colin Patrick Mackay, 3rd Battalion, in a commemorative certificate matt. Presented to the Australian War Museum, on behalf of the Tamworth Half-Squadron of the 12th Light Horse Regiment, the decorative elements include serveral First World War official photographs and decorative Australian floral designs.
Prior to his enlistment on 11 January 1916, Pte Colin Patrick Mackay, of Currabubula, NSW, served in the militia, with the 5th Australian (New England) Light Horse Regiment, later renamed as the 12th Australian (New England) Light Horse Regiment. Joining the 3rd Battalion, Pte Mackay embarked for overseas service onboard HMAT A63 Karoola on 16 June 1915 and travelled to Gallipoli. He was listed as missing during the Battle of Lone Pine, later declared killed in action between 7-12 August 1915, after a Court of Inquiry was held on 5 June 1916. He was 23 years old.
