Studio portrait of 4208a Private (Pte) Ernest Alfred Hall, 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion and two others.
Description
Group studio portrait of 4208a Private (Pte) Ernest Alfred Hall, 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion (standing, at right), and two other soldiers. On the back is a letter dated 22 June 1916 from Pte Hall to Wal Hall. He says the photograph was taken "a few hours after I had come out of the trenches, so I am a bit muddy". Pte Hall notes that he is wearing "our colours (purple with a white border)" and points out the badges that his "cobber" is wearing on his collar. Pte Hall was killed in action on 4 October 1917, at the age of 22, and is buried at Belgian Battery Corner Cemetery, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium.
