Description

Studio portrait of 2905043 (2167603, 433691, NX4545, NX700490) Lieutenant (later Major) James (Jim) Copeman MBE MC MM. Born in Ballina, NSW, Copeman enlisted for service on 10 November 1938 and was posted to 2/3 Battalion during the Second World War. He was awarded the Military Medal for his actions in fighting around Damascus in 1941, and the Military Cross for his actions at Wonginara, New Guinea in 1945.

After the Second World War, Copeman also served as a military observer in Kashmir with the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP); in Palestine with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO); and in Pakistan with the United Nations India Pakistan Observation Mission (UNIPOM). Copeman was appointed MBE (Military) on 12 June 1971 as part of Queen's Birthday Honours, for "outstanding contributions to Army administrative services over a long period."
