Image relating to USS Chicago (1931-1943)
Description
Commander W W Hastings, United States Navy, USN Maintenance Representative, Sydney, salutes (right) aboard USS Chicago, probably about the time the vessel was being repaired at Cockatoo Island after being torpedoed at Savo Island. A note penned by Captain Howard Douglas Bode is on the reverse and he had sent it to Commodore Hastings as a memento. It may be on the occasion of a presentation of a mounted relic (on the table to the left) which is believed to be a torpedo net cutter part from a Japanese torpedo, probably retrieved from the Japanese midget submarine attack which occurred while the Chicago was in Sydney Harbour.
