Description

Australian Light Horseman Victor A. Nosworthy (994) wearing Prussian pickelhaube. Nosworthy enlisted in March 1915 and was a member of the 4th and later 12th Light Horse Regiments. He served in Palestine and is likely to have been present at the charge of Beersheba.
This painting was created by artist David Barker upon the subjects return to Australia in 1919. Barker is best known for his front cover design of the ANZAC Book, in addition to his larrikin illustrations and depictions of Australian soldiers during the First World War.
In November 1919, the Grosnevor Hotel was the scene of an incident involving returned soldiers and Prime Minister Billy Hughes. A group of 30 to 40 soldiers pounded on the doors of the Hotel requesting to speak to Hughes who was inside. The men were demanding promised war gratuity pay that had not yet been distributed. Police were called and upon their arrival the crowd disposed.
