Description

Recording of the song titled 'I can't find a place for that', created as part of the Music and the First World War project. Lyrics written by Ralph Roberts with music composed by Harold Montague. Produced by Chris Latham, with David Hidden as vocalist and Alan Hicks on piano. This recording was made at Flat Rock Studios, Sydney, on 16 August 2018. The work is performed in the spirit of the time with some changes made for the modern ear.

Chris Latham, producer of this recording, notes: 'This song needs to be sung by a professional as it is hard to sing due to the vocal range extending across an octave and a third. It sits very high in the vocalist’s voice. The turn in the melody at the end of the chorus is quite charming and lovely. The narrator in the lyrics is talking about how writing is not his best suite and he wants to say this but there isn’t room for it. It is a funny song that has an unusual appeal to sentiment at the end. There are references to illiteracy and it also features the music hall convention of repeating the chorus at the end so that the audience can join in for the second run-through.'
