[Sound recording] Light Cavalry
Recording of the song titled 'Light Cavalry', created as part of the Music and the First World War project. Music composed by Franz von Suppae. Produced by John Lewis, with Alan Hicks on piano. This recording was made at Flat Rock Studios, Sydney, on 28 August 2018. The work is performed in the spirit of the time with some changes made for the modern ear.
Chris Latham, producer of this recording, notes: 'This is a famous piece and it is famous for a reason. This is still played today all the time. It is standard repertoire for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra's New Year's Eve concert. It is representative of silent movie music and melodramatic. It is very catchy and has little grace notes which is what makes it so effective. This piece features tunes that are in our cultural memory. It is an overture so it has all the melodies of the opera that follows in it. The composer is a well-known name in Austria. It is a tune that everyone likes to hear and features emotive ballads.'
