Description

Recording of the instrumental piece titled, 'The soldier's homecoming: the arrival of a troopship'. Music composed by Carl Reber. Produced by Chris Latham, with Alan Hicks on piano. This recording was made at Flat Rock Studios, Sydney, on 16 March 2018. The work is performed in the spirit of the time with some changes made for the modern ear.

Chris Latham, producer of this recording, notes: 'We would watch a documentary on TV these days but this is only way that they would have been able to hear about the war experience. This piece has a low musical quality and speaks of the need to share experiences. It is like movie music and propaganda. Features a bugler, brass band, pipers, drums and fife in the music. The Scottish piper is a sign of how close Australia was to Scotland at the time and the piece of music is very British. It is illustrative of the period and exhibits all the cliches of music featured in silent movies.'
