Description

Recording of the song titled, 'He Sleeps Tonight By Lonesome Pine', created as part of the Music and the First World War project. Lyrics written by George Foster with music composed by Felix Le Roy. Produced by Chris Latham, with Andrew Goodwin as vocalist (tenor), and Alan Hicks on piano. This recording was made at Flat Rock Studios, Sydney, on 24 May 2018. The work is performed in the spirit of the time with some changes made for the modern ear.

Chris Latham, producer of this recording, notes: 'This is a very pretty tune and very clever. It is a memorial song. It is written in a major key which is at odds with what you expect but it gives it a dignity and nobility. It is a plain song with no tricks about it. A high note was added at the end because it felt like it needed something. There is a sense of restraint in the song and that it isn’t trying to make you feel sad about it but just tell you. This song is utterly simple and perfectly made. The strength is its restraint. It is very pure and absolutely correct.'
