[Sound recording] The Balkan Princess overture
Recording of 'The Balkan Princess Overture', created as part of the Music and the First World War project. Music composed by Paul A Rubens. Produced by John Lewis, with Alan Hicks on piano. This recording was made at Flat Rock Studios, Sydney, on 28 August 2018. The work is performed in the spirit of the time with some changes made for the modern ear.
Chris Latham, producer of this recording, notes: 'This is a well-written piece that is very pretty. Overtures bring together all the themes so that when you hear it the second time around, you know what it is. This piece is quite hard to play and is a pleasing group of tunes. It showcases popular songs from the era. If it is played as a solo piano piece, you virtually have to be a virtuouso to play it.'
