Description

Diary relating to the First World War service of 30137 Gunner Alexander Sutherland Mackay, 8th Australian Field Artillery Brigade. This diary written on two different types of paper between 15 June and the 26 October covers: His arrival in France and joining the 3rd Division Ammunition Column; his activities as a Gunner in his various camps; his time in the Trench Mortar School near St Omer; the confusion he felt upon returning to his unit and finding it had moved; the times he gets in trouble with senior officers; His transfer to the 8th Australian Field Artillery Brigade; his moving to and first action at the front line; the battle on the 20 September in the Ypres-Zillebeke area; the conditions he finds after the action and the continuous shelling of the area by the Germans and how it was affecting him.
