Photograph collection: 32122 Gunner John Charles Harris, 8th Field Artillery Brigade
Collection of 26 photographs relating to the service of 32122 Gunner (Gnr) John Charles Harris, 8th Field Artillery Brigade. Born in Cornwall, UK, John Harris was employed as Postal Assistant and resided in Milsons Point, North Sydney prior to enlistment, aged 26, on 8 October 1916. He embarked from Sydney with the 10th Reinforcements, 4th Australian Divisional Ammunition Column (DAC) aboard RMS Osterley on 10 February 1917, and following training at Tidworth Camp, UK, proceeded to France on 1 April. Following the cessation of hostilities he was transferred to the Australian Army Postal Corps on 22 February 1919. Gnr Harris returned to Australia aboard HMAT Takada on 18 July 1919 and was discharged in on 19 October. Images include a pre-war portrait taken at James Cruden Studios; photographs of the rail head and ammunition dump at Suez; two photographs at Tidworth and two of surrounding villages; seven prints of ruins on the Western Front including the road to Charleroi and near St Quentin; Gnr Harris and an unknown serviceman resting in the woods near Bosigney following seven weeks in the line; two informal portraits of Gnr Harris and unknown servicemen; three images taken from the camera of an unknown German soldier found on the Hindenburg Line (including a portrait of the soldier; three photographs of Versailles and a TPI Association card with photographic identification from 1968.
