Description
Studio portrait of 413396 Pilot Officer (PO) Arthur Long of NSW. A school teacher prior to enlisting on 17 August 1941, he completed his initial training at Bradfield Park, NSW and was later attached to the RAF. PO Long, attached to 467 Squadron, RAF, took off from Bottesford, England airfield on Operation Mannheim in a Lancaster EE135 PO-Y with a crew of 8, for a mission over Speyer, Germany. He died on 23 September 1943 when the Lancaster crashed near Altertheim, Germany. He was 23 years of age. PO Long is buried in the Durnbach War Cemetery, Bavaria, Germany.
