Description

Studio portrait of (28) 2nd Lieutenant Eric Burton Elliot Chapman. Born in Marrickville, Sydney in 1890, Chapman was working as a surveyor prior to the outbreak of war. He enlisted in the AIF on 23 August 1915, was promoted to acting sergeant in December 1915 and posted to the 33rd Battalion. He embarked from Sydney on (A74) HMAT Marathon on 4 May 1916. He was commsissioned on 8 February 1917 and transferred to the 35th Battlion as a 2nd Lieutenant on 18 February 1917. He was killed in action on 7 June 1917 at Messines, Belgium and has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres. His brother 2nd Lieutenant Edward Laurie Elliott Chapman, 33rd Battalion was killed in action on 12 July 1917.

Annotation on print reads 'Lieut Eric B. Elliot-Chapman. Enlisted August 1915, killed in battle of Messines 7th June 1917'. His colour patch has also been painted above the inscription.
