Description

Studio portrait of Lieutenant Edward Laurie Elliot Chapman, 33rd Battalion. Born in Marrickville, Sydney in 1891, Chapman worked as a stock and station agent prior to the outbreak of the First World War. He enlisted in the AIF on 23 August 1915 and was assigned the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the 33rd Battalion. Chapman embarked from Sydney, NSW, aboard (A74) HMAT Marathon on 4 May 1916. He was promoted to lieutenant on 1 August 1916. He was killed in action on 12 July 1917 and is buried in the Kandahar Farm Cemetery, Neuve-Eglise, Belgium. His brother 2nd Lieutenant Eric Burton Elliot Chapman, 35th Battalion was killed in action on 7 June 1917.

Annotation on print reads 'Lieut. Edward L. Elliot-Chapman. Enlisted August 1915, killed, France 12th July 1917'. The battalion colour patch has also been added to the print, just above the inscription.
