Walking under the stars – Curtis McGrath
Studio portrait of Curtis McGrath.
This is one in a series of photographs titled "Walking under the stars" by Peter Brew-Bevan. The series highlights a group of modern veterans, both men and women who, despite wounds, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other challenges, have become role models. Whether physically or psychologically wounded (or, in most instances, both), they have overcome numerous obstacles, and through their work and achievements are a source of hope and inspiration for the veteran community and the wider public.
Curtis McGrath
Sapper Curtis McGrath, being treated for wounds following an improvised explosive device blast in Afghanistan in 2012, joked that the world would see him at the Paralympics. McGrath lost his left leg below the knee and his right leg at the knee. Within three months he was walking on prosthetic legs. McGrath took up canoeing and swimming as part of his rehabilitation and, true to his word, won gold for canoeing at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. McGrath is an ambassador of the charity Mates4Mates, and the 2018 Invictus Games.
