Studio portrait of 516 Corporal Rees William Thomas MM, 21st Battalion
Description
Studio portrait of 6907A Private (Pte) Horace Osbourne Thomas, 22nd Battalion. A cabinet maker from Ringwood, Victoria, Pte Thomas enlisted on 14 March 1917, following his elder brother 516 Private Rees William Thomas who had enlisted on 4 February 1915. He was 18 years old. After a period of training, he embarked on the 11 May 1917 and was taken on strength into the reinforcements of the 22nd Battalion in France. Over the course of the next year, Pte Thomas was hospitalised multiple times suffering illness, the effects of gas and wounds received in action though he continued to return to his unit. Pte Thomas returned to Australia for discharge on 31 October 1919.
