Letters from William George Blaskett to his family, 1915-1916
Description
Letters relating to the First World War service of 3232 Sergeant William George Blaskett, 16th Infantry Battalion, 48th Infantry Battalion, November 1915 - May 1916.
In this collection of letters from Blaskett to his family, the author writes about his embarkation from Australia, arrival in Egypt and subsequent training at Zeitoun Camp over a period of six months. He describes attending a school of instruction for prospective non-commissioned officers and notes the marked contrast to general training routines and the challenges of camp life. During periods of leave he writes about sightseeing in Cairo, and offers his impressions of the city and its people including befriending members of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. Closing letters primarily concern a training accident in which Blaskett suffered a gunshot wound to his hand, a period of convalescence in hospital and his concerted efforts to rejoin his battalion before their embarkation for France.
