Das War Smolensk [That was Smolensk]
Description
The town of Smolensk is located in western Russia close to the Russian/Belarus border. In 1941, Operation Barbarossa saw the German forces advancing on Soviet territory and panzer armies were closing in on Smolensk. The damage sustained during the two-month long Battle of Smolensk almost left the entire city in ruins. Smolensk remained under German occpuation until 1943.
