Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of 3565 Sergeant Francis Viney DCM, 3rd Australian Field Artillery Brigade and 25th Australian Field Artillery Brigade, Egypt and France, 1915 - 1918.

The collection consists of 4 dairies, which cover the period from December 1915 to November 1918 and record Viney's experiences at camp in Egypt and later his service on the Western Front with the 25th Howitzer Brigade and the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade. Viney writes about daily life, training, food, the performance of his battery, the weather conditions, German attacks, and briefly on his periods of hospitalisation after he was wounded in December 1916 and again in October 1917. The back pages of the diaries contain lists of food and equipment items, names and home addresses of other soldiers, and artillery calculations. The diary entries conclude with the armistice on 11 November 1918.
