Studio portrait of 6340 Private Arthur Nicholas Ronlund
Studio portrait of 6340 Private (Pte) Arthur Nicholas Ronlund, 15th Battalion, with hand tinted yellow and red flowers in the foreground, possibly egg and bacon plant (Eutaxia Obovata). Pte Nicholas was the fifth child of Askel Ronlund and Maria Matilda Peurala of Finland. On 22 December 1899 the family left London and boarded the Oroya and arrived at Sydney on 5 February 1900. Their official migration was finished at Brisbane where they were housed at the Immigration Depot, Kangaroo Point (Yungaba).
Pte Nicholas was a farmer prior to enlistment on 22 March 1916, and embarked from Brisbane on HMAT Clan McGillivray A46. He was taken prisoner of war (POW) when he was wounded by a gunshot to the left kneecap, on 11 April 1917 and was held at Minden Gefangenenlager, and remained a POW until his arrival at England on 6 December 1918. On 5 March 1919 he embarked for Australia on HT Nevasa and disembarked Australian on 25 April 1919. Pte Ronlund was discharged from the AIF on 8 June 1919.
