Description

SX6229 Private (Pte) Douglas Melvyn Mickan, 2/3 Battalion, and Ruth Mickan interviewed by Alison Viney Houghton for her "The Age of Innocence 1937-1947" oral history project. Pte Micken enlisted in 2/3 Machine Gun Battalion and fought in the Syrian campaign. He toured Syria playing cornet and piano accordian as a member of a concert party. The Battalion then sailed to Oosthaven and Pte Micken was taken prisoner of war by the Japanese. He worked on the Thai-Burma Railway, and resided in the camps Hinton and Tamuang.
