Description

AJRP Sub-Series name: Post-surrender Rabaul material received from HQ 8 Military District. This first part of this item is a memorandum regarding an unfavourable report on affairs in Rabaul by KITAGAKI, former ws correspondent. He reported that strong milirarism was intact at Japanese camps in Rabaul, and that high-ranking officers were indulging in luxury while their subordinates were made to toil for food. The Chiefs of Staff of the South East Area Army and the South East Area Army Fleet argued that repatriation journalists had begun fabricating stories critical of militarism, fearing that they might otherwise be perceived as military sympathisers.
