New Guinea - Overprinted Australian Stamps - 1918 1d King George V stamps with Second Watermark
Description
Block of 30 King George V stamps, overprinted with N.W. Pacific Islands and carrying a value of 1d (1 penny).
During the First World War, Australia administrated German territory in New Guinea. On 4 October 1914, the Australian Administration reported that for postal purposes two separate issues of stamps were made for use in New Guinea.
1. Stocks of German colonial stamps for the Territories of German New Guinea and the Marshall Islands were overprinted and surcharged with the Royal Cypher "G.R.I." and new values in British currency.
2. Current Australian postage stamps overprinted with "N.W. PACIFIC ISLANDS".
Australian stamps consisted of two series - the Kangaroo and Kind George V designs - which were used until 1925 when German New Guinea, then known as the Territory of New Guinea, issued the territory's first stamp series.
