AP3-C Lockheed Orion aircraft (A9-659)
AP3-C Orion aircraft (A9-659). Four-engined low wing monoplane aircraft used for naval fleet support, maritime surveillance, search and survivor supply and anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare. This example was one of 18 such aircraft operated by the RAAF and based at RAAF Base Edinburgh in South Australia.
In service with 11 Squadron. This particular aircraft was built in 1985, and arrived at RAAF Base Edinburgh SA in July 1985 and took its final flight on 28 June 2018. The aircraft is in disassembled state.
This airframe has seen significant service including Cold War, East Timor, MEAO, border protection and national tasks such as civilian rescue and bushfire observation. On 28 January 2003 A9-659 together with A9-751, was the first aircraft to deploy for Middle Eastern operations.
