Canon Auto Zoom 814 Super-8 film camera, mounting a Canon C-8 7.5 - 60mm 1:1,4 zoom lens on the front (serial number 109275) with an amber coating, and a black plastic lens cap, displaying the CANON name moulded into it. As well as the lens, the front carries the SLR view finder and a built in exposure meter, while a push trigger for the shutter is positioned towards the base of the front.
The right hand side features a three position switch marked 'OFF - R (running) - RC-RL' (remote control and running lock). The RC-RL setting locks the shutter trigger; a siding release for the hand grip is provided which is stored in the horizontal position, but can be released to the vertical position - the handle also carries the four AA sized batteries which provide power for the film drive; a sliding selector switch for day of night filming; an auto filming sliding switch and an apeture control slide switch. This side also carries the power zoom control marked 'T - W'.
The access to the film cartridge is positioned on this side, controlled with a revolving latch, while a small window reveals the type of film that is marked on the cartiridge. A circular film counter behind clear plastic is positioned at the rear with markings from 0 to 50 (whether feet or metres isn't indicated); the eyepiece for the viewfinder is postioned here as is a small socket for the remote control cord.
The left hand side carries the film speed indicator (24, 18, or 12) as well as a tiny battery indicator. There is a plastic circular screw cover for the two 1.3 volt mercury batteries which provide power to the exposure meter.
The top of the camera mounts a leather bound carrier. The base carries a screw fitting for a tripod and a red battery tester button.
This Canon Auto Zoom 814 Super-8 film camera was used by the Australin War Memorial Film Section during the 1970s.
