Description

A British soldier, possibly of the Welsh Guards, moves in from the left towards a German soldier dragging a corpse (centre) as another British soldier stands at ready on the right. On the liberation of Belsen on 15 April 1945, the SS (Schutzstaffel) captors became themselves prisoners in this Nazi concentration camp and were ordered to deal with the aftermath of their genocide against the Jews who with other nationalities were incarcerated in this camp. This body, one of 10 000 found on occupation, would soon be buried with others in mass graves with such little dignity as the picture indicates. The scene was photographed by VX93880 Lieutenant (Lt) Alan Moore, an Australian official war artist who accompanied Allied forces in their advance across occupied Europe in 1945. Whilst at Belsen, Lt Moore made several paintings, sketches and drawings as a record of Nazi atrocities committed against the predominantly Jewish inmates. A personal camera was also used to record events observed in the Allied occupation of the camp and these black and white images also provide witness to one Australian's experience of the Holocaust. A copy negative of this image is held in the collection under the accession number P03007.006.
