1914! Paris: Fluctuat nec Mergitur
Description
French propaganda print No. 6 in the series '1914!' featuring illustrations by Maurice Neumont. Titled the "Fluctuat nec Mergitur" (loosely translated: [she] is rocked but does not sink), the motto of the Paris Coat of Arms, it depicts a Parisan woman holding the French flag (a homage to Eugene Delacroix's 1830 painting 'Liberty Leading the People) and her son standing in defiance of an unseen enemy. Behind them troops from various branches of the French Army are coming out of trenches to support them. The print is dedicated to General Gallieni, military Governor of Paris, who had sworn to defend Paris until the end.
