Diary of Arthur William Hence, May - September 1942
Diary relating to the Second World War service of NX70153 Captain Arthur William Hence, 2/18th Australian Infantry Battalion, May - September 1942.
This file contains a handwritten diary and a nominal roll kept by Hence in his role as Adjutant to 1 Battalion Prisoners of War under Lieutenant Colonel George Ernest Ramsay. The diary opens in May 1942 at Changi with details of an announcement that a working party of 3,000 men are slated to be transferred, and goes on to document the voyage to Burma and communications with Japanese captors. The diary subsequently details routines in camp, the names of individuals, construction of an airfield, movement of men to Tavoy (now known at Dawei), deteriorating conditions in camp and increasing casualties, ending in September 1942.
