Description
Western Sahara. 1991-12. Lance Corporal Steve Cooney, radio operator of Kempsey, NSW, and Enoggera, Qld, giving lollipops to children at Laayonne. He is one of a 40-man Australian Army contingent (mostly from the 1st Signals Regiment) with the United Nations peacekeeping force in Western Sahara (MINURSO), providing communications for 3,000 UN peacekeeping soldiers from thirty countries, monitoring a ceasefire and organising a referendum to give the people a choice between independence or integration with neighbouring Morocco.
