Western Sahara. 1991-12. Undertaking peacekeeping duties in the desert between Laayonne and Oum Dreyga are Corporal (Cpl) Colin Gamble, rigger, of Cunnamulla, Qld, and Stafford Heights, Qld, with Cpl Greg Scanlon, linesman, of Hillston, NSW, and Ferny Grove, Qld. They are members of a 40-man Australian Army contingent (mostly from the 1st Signals Regiment) with the United Nations peacekeeping force in Western Sahara (MINURSO), providing communications for 3,000 UN peacekeeping soldiers from thirty countries, monitoring a ceasefire and organising a referendum to give the people a choice between independence or integration with neighbouring Morocco.
