Description

Western Sahara. 1991-12. Corporal Darren Brauer (centre), radio operator, 1st Signals Regiment, of Beenleigh, Qld and Enoggera, Qld, stops to chat to Nurse Sonja D'Agostino, Swiss Medical Unit, Bern (left) and Corporal William Woods, of Saskatchewan, Canada, during a break from duties at an isolated desert outpost. He is one of 40 Australian soldiers providing communications support to the United Nations Mission for the Referendum (MINURSO) in the Western Sahara - a peacekeeping force made up of 3000 soldiers from thirty countries including Australia. The UN is involved in bringing about a peaceful settlement between Morocco and the Western Saharan independence movement "Politsario" by monitoring a ceasefire between the two and organising a referendum.
