Description
Army medical officer Captain Thi Thanh Tam Tran of Durack, Qld, treats a child as part of Operation Habitat, the Australian humanitarian relief mission to northern Iraq. The Australian Defence Force contingent was located at Gir-i-Pit, around 30 kilometres north of Dahak on Northern Iraq. Here, in mountainous terrain, four Australian medical teams would travel the region, providing medical care to some of the half a million Kurds who had fled north from their homes to escape the Iraqi Army. Captain Tran herself had migrated to Australia from Vietnam as an 11-year old refugee in 1976.
