3023 Private Thomas Alfred Burtt
Studio portrait of 3023 Private (Pte) Thomas Alfred Burtt, 25th Australian Infantry Battalion and 33rd Australian Infantry Battalion. A shearer prior to enlisting on 22 June 1915, he embarked from Brisbane aboard HMAT Kyarra (A55) on 16 August 1915. After having suffered frost bite to both feet in December 1915 while in Gallipoli, he returned to Australia in 1916 for admittance to 6th Australian General Hospital. He was discharged as medically unfit on 12 August 1916. He reenlisted on 7 November 1916, embarking from Sydney aboard HMAT Anchises (A68) on 24 January 1917. Pte Burt died of wounds while serving in France, on 3 April 1918. He was 24 years old.
Pte Burtt was one of three brothers who served during the First World War. His brothers, 3020 Lieutenant Sergeant Henry William Burtt and 3021 Private James Edward Burtt both returned home to Australia. Henry went on to serve as a corporal during the Second World War.
