"We want more of our cobbers to come along and board with us. Terms easy". Group portrait of 2nd Light Horse Regiment recruits; believed to include 2029 Gunner John Ellis, (later killed in action and of the 11th Australian Field Artillery Brigade) marked with a cross (second from right).
With letter to his wife on back, dated 7th Nov 1915:
"My dear Girl/ I wonder what you/will think of this black/ fellow who is yourboy/ It will give you an/ idea of our mess. I am/ just writing this in a/ hurry. It will soon be/ 9 o'clock & fall in. I will/ try to write to you tonight/ so la la& be good. I saw/ Lesley & his mate yesterday./ love & kisses to baby & you/ & self. your loving Hubby/ Jack xxxxxxxxxxx".
