Description

Four paper envelopes containing 65 negatives, which had been stored in a photo album compiled by NX9629 Lieutenant (Lt) John Fritz Sachs MM, Z Special Unit. Some of the negatives appear to match the prints displayed in the photo album. The negatives primarily contain familiy scenes, camp life, training, group portraits and military actions.

Prior to enlisting on 2 January 1940, Lt John Sachs had attended the Kings School, where he served in the cadet corps, and went on to become a mechanic. Although he was a qualified pilot, he enlisted in the militia in September 1938, and was discharged to serve in the Australian Imperial Force in January 1940. He was awarded a Military Medal in 1941, after escaping and then evading recapture which included using a stolen 16 foot sailing boat to travel from island to island in the Aegean Sea until he made it to the Turkish coast. In 1945, he was captured again while on a mission with Z Special Unit. Lt Sachs was executed while a prisoner of war on or around the 5th of April, 1945. He was 32 years old.

These negatives are part of a wider collection of objects related to the service of the Sachs brothers during the Second World War; NX9629 Lieutenant (Lt) John Fritz Sachs MM, NX163744 Gunner Thomas Sachs and NX10979 Gunner Peter Sachs.
