Spafford, Frederick Michael (Pilot Officer, b.1918 - d. 1943)
Collection relating to the Second World War service of 407380 Pilot Officer Frederick Michael Spafford DFC, DFM. Spafford, an air bomber with No. 617 "Dambuster" Squadron, was killed when his aircraft was shot down by anti-aircraft fire over Germany on 16 September 1943.
The collection includes a letter sent by Spafford to his aunt in April 1943, noting that he has worked his way back to a second tour of operations and is now flying with a highly decorated Wing Commander (referring to Guy Gibson). Collection also includes a letter of sympathy from King George VI and a Commemorative Scroll concerning Spafford's death, and two letters from the Department of Air to Spafford's uncle confirming a posthumous promotion to flying officer and noting details of his grave in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery.
