Description

Letters relating to the Second World War service of Sergeant 13246 Sergeant Ronald Maurice Pullin, Federated Malay States Volunteer Force.

Pullin was a prisoner of war of the Japanese, and was interned in Singapore and Thailand between 1942 and 1945. As a prisoner, he worked on the Burma-Thai Railway. In the letters written to his family after his liberation, Pullin describes events that occurred during his captivity, including an episode of cholera, being thrashed by bamboo, keeping a garden for food, and the day they were released, in which they hoisted a flag and sang the national anthem. He also gives details of events after his release, including planes dropping supplies and being cheered by ex-prisoners, being paid, meeting with previous workmates, inflation, and his journey home.

This collection also contains a letter that Pullin received from home during his captivity.
