Description

Small green album, of 51 photographs over 26 pages, relating to Charles Henry Copp and his service in Egypt and Gallipoli during 1915. All images are captioned and dated.

An optician from Bourke, New South Wales, 604 Private Copp enlisted in the AIF on 17 August 1914. He embarked for overseas on 21 August 1914 and served in Egypt and Gallipoli with the 5th Battalion. Wounded in action between 8-12 May 1914,, Copp was invalided back to Australia in July 1915. Once recovered, he returned to duty in October 1915 and again embarked for overseas service on 20 October 1916, now a 2nd Lieutenant with the 46th Battalion. Taken on strength to the 5th Battalion in April 1917, Copp was soon promoted to Lieutenant. In September 1917, Copp was attached to the Royal Flying Corps, undertaking various training courses, before joining No 2 Squadron, Australian Flying Corp as a pilot in 1918. Copp returned to Australia at the end of the war and was discharged on 14 October 1919.
