OP Commando Dawn (5) Recovery KAF Day HUD CH47.
Operation Commando Dawn (an operation staged through Camp Bastian, Helmand Province, Southern Afghanistan). Filmed by Captain Jason Otter, C Squadron, 5th Aviation Regiment (5 Avn Regt) from the cockpit of Australian Army CH-47D Chinook A15-201 (Flying Pilot: Captain Steven "Faz" Fazel). Captain Otter later noted: "This was a US operation on 28 March (2008). The aircraft is CH-47D Chinook A15-201. The footage is shot enroute to the target west of Kandahar over [Green Belt] terrain. It shows us flying at 50’ above the ground at 106kts ground speed. Given the direction we must be getting close to the objective as we were flying SE. I recall travelling west then back into the east for the final approach. The mission was 3.6 hours in duration from take off, to insertion and then extraction following hot refuel - we used the UK Camp Bastian for refuel". This is one of six digital videos of the mission filmed by Otter - see AWM2019.311.8.43 to AWM2019.311.8.48.
