Interview with Lesley O'Donnell (When the war came to Australia)
Description
Mrs Lesley O'Donnell was a shop assistant at David Jones department store in Sydney during the war. She describes the range of merchandise available in shoes; how the rationing system worked; and the panic buying before rationing was instituted. She describes the Americans who shopped at David Jones: glamorous, charming, popular, bought gift merchandise. Silk products were one item which disappeared in the war years. People accepted the shortages as a necessity.
