Description

Mr Pisaturo was an Italian soldier during World War 2 who served in Libya. He describes conditions for the Italian troops in the desert: very bad. He was taken prisoner in Benghazi and ended up sailing on the Queen Mary to be interned in Australia. He describes his experiences as an Italian Prisoner of War in Australia, first in Hay NSW, then in Cowra NSW. He discusses their conditions and treatment in the camps, their amusements and activities, and his work details on a farm in the Sutton Forest, NSW. Mr Pisaturo describes the Japanese POWs in Cowra and their prison break. He was sent to work in St Ives, Sydney and escaped and went to work on a banana plantation. After the war he was repatriated to Italy but returned to Australia after two years. He discusses his view of Australia and the attitude that you can do very well if you work hard with your hands.
