Description

Mrs Doig recounts her experiences of life in Perth during the war. She discusses the availability of chocolate, underwear, tinned food- all from the eastern states. Appliances eg refrigerators were bought with a permit. She mentions rationing, clothing, blackouts, cooking. Mrs Doig comments that the population was horrified at the thought of invasion by the Japanese, and she discusses the problem of isolation. The impact of the Americans is mentioned- they brought interesting food, and were good company, polite, generous. Mrs Doig mentions Christmas Day under austerity, and concludes by discussing the war years as a mother: trying, worrying, making do, careful with things.
