Description

Mrs Haley was a young girl when war was declared. In her interview she talks about her families reaction to the announcement of war. She also talks about the two Japanese POWs that were sent to her family's farm to work. She talks about the canteen that would come to the POWs every few weeks to provide them with cigarettes and other items. Her father was a veteran of both the Boer war and World War I, and was a member of the local VDC. He was called to present himself at the local railway station with the other men from the VDC, but wasn't needed. Mrs Haley talks about the effect of seeing the local boys off to war at the local railway station, and having to return to her father's farm to help run the farm. She recalls her fear of Japanese invasion. She was working as a Nurse in Sydney towards the end of the war and recalls being at Kings Cross on VP Day.
